Erin McNally is a TechMission Corps member
working at the Boston Higher Education Resource Center (HERC), which
is based at a church in downtown Boston. The HERC merges
educational, spiritual and local resources to support minority
students in the Boston area and prepares urban youth to achieve
academically by bridging access to higher education. Their programs
focus on 1) education and career exploration, 2) leadership
development, 3) character and life skills, and 4) parent outreach;
specific programs include SAT Prep, Mentoring, and Computer
Literacy.
Working at an urban ministry can be both
challenging and rewarding. Sometimes it can be hard to see the
positive through the negative, but we like to take time to reflect
on the good that we see happening through centers like yours!
We've
asked Erin to share a bit about her experience working at the
HERC's English as a Second Language (ESL) program over the past few
months. She reports that, "It's amazing to see how students lose
their fear of speaking in our classes, gain confidence, and are
therefore able to reach their goals." One
student from the HERC explained, "When I started to take this class,
I began to feel so free to speak. I feel so confident. I took the
citizenship [test] and passed. Now, I voted for the first time in
the elections. I am so proud." We feel truly encouraged and blessed as we think
about the community of people around us making a difference in the lives of
others! Do you have a praise
report or story from your computer center? Or a great resource you'd
like to share? If so, send an email to newsletter@techmission.org.
