TechMission Corps New York

TechMission New York Program Description:

TechMission New York is the New York initiative of the TechMission Corps (TMC) program, an AmeriCorps program where we place AmeriCorps (TechMission Corps) Members in pre-existing K-8 afterschool and teen programs to support those programs.

Realizing that many of our program Sites were understaffed, we have adjusted the program focus to include technology and academic enrichment equally; TMC Members will provide at least one hour of technology and/or online safety instruction as well as provide homework help and one-to-one or group tutoring as needed.

Our September 2007 expansion into New York City will involve a partnership with Generation Xcel. Generation Xcel provides an afterschool program to underserved youth ages eight to thirteen, five days per week, from 3:00pm – 6:00 pm, and provides services to older youth ages thirteen to eighteen, five days per week, from 4:00pm – 7:00 pm. Services in both programs include tutoring, mentoring, homework help, writing, acting, dance, theatre, music and video. The TMC Member will focus on providing technology and academic support services to participants of the program, but will also assist in other areas of the program as needed.

In coordination with our national partner, Here’s Life Inner City (HLIC), we will place a TMC Member in HLIC’s headquarters to facilitate volunteer recruitment and management for HLIC Sites, TechMission New York Sites, and other faith- and community-based organizations in New York State, the Tri-State region, and nationally.
