TechMission Corps: Denver

TechMission Denver Program Description:

As part of the national TechMission Corps program, we currently provide three TechMission Denver Members who serve 180 youth at K-8 and teen afterschool Program Sites in Denver. TechMission Denver is a year-round program. The majority of activities will be provided during the school year, from September through June. During the summer months (July – August) participants will still receive some academic instruction, tech instruction and on-line safety.

For the 2007-2008 school year, we have established the following goals and objectives for our Program Sites in Denver (and our goals for 2008-2009 will be similar):

 Program Goals:

  • To increase academic performance of disadvantaged youth in K-8 afterschool programs to enable them to succeed in school and in life.

  • To increase academic performance of disadvantaged teens through technology and other activities to help prepare them to get into college or prepare for the workforce.

Program Objectives:

  • 200 K-8 youth will receive academic enrichment and homework assistance

  • 75% of these youth will increase by at least one letter grade in one subject or maintain an “A” or “B”

  • 90% of these youth will be promoted to the next grade level

  • 100 K-8 youth will receive an average of one hour of technology and/or online safety instruction per week

  • 85% of youth receiving tech instruction will increase in their knowledge of technology

  • 25 teens will receive academic assistance, tech training, and mentoring around college prep

In order to achieve these objectives, TechMission Denver Members will use a computer-based academic curriculum from Eduss, a rigorous educational software program, to assist the K-8 students in English, Math and Phonics. They will also provide homework help and other general academic enrichment activities. Members also provide technology and/or online safety activities to program participants for at least one hour per week, helping provide them with skills to thrive in our technology-driven society. Members will provide teen participants with some combination of homework help, mentoring, college counseling and assistance in completing college applications.

We have partnered with Here’s Life Inner City to provide support and services to participants in 3 of their afterschool program Sites: Open Door Ministries, Crossroads of the Rockies and Sun Valley Youth Center.  We have partnered with sustainable organizations to build the capacity of pre-existing programs that serve the community.

In addition to providing academic enrichment and technology activities for disadvantaged youth, our TechMission Corps Members also coordinate volunteers and in-kind donations for their Program Sites. In total, our three TechMission Denver Members will coordinate 100 volunteers and acquire $20,000 of in-kind donations for their Sites in the 2007-2008 school year.
